SUMMARY:

This work proposes the implementation of a maker space in public schools as a strategy to develop practical and creative skills in students. The Maker Movement, a branch of Do It Yourself (DIY), has gained prominence as an approach that encourages innovation, prototyping, and rapid production of objects in a collaborative environment. The growing adoption of maker spaces by educational institutions has been driven by the search for more engaging and contextualized classes, allowing students to apply knowledge in a practical way and visualize its relevance in the real world. The study used Google Alerts and Google Trends to identify interest and news related to maker culture and maker spaces. It was found that the opening of new maker spaces, particularly in primary and secondary schools, is a growing trend. Furthermore, it was observed that the utilization of these spaces stimulates collaborative work, creativity, and student engagement. The setup of a maker space requires careful planning, considering the necessary equipment, tools, and materials, as well as its alignment with the needs of the educational institution and the school curriculum. The implementation of a maker space enables teachers to work in a practical and interdisciplinary manner, stimulating student agency and hands-on experimentation. Additionally, the development of practical and creative skills, known as soft skills, becomes essential to prepare students for the challenges of the current job market. In this context, this work proposes the realization of a professional development course for teachers, aiming to assist them in setting up and effectively utilizing a maker space even with limited financial resources. The pilot class will be used to refine the course, which will be made available online as a technological product. It is expected that this proposal will contribute to the strengthening of maker culture in public schools, promoting the development of practical and creative skills in students.
